Allergy Information

Hypo-Allergenic Qualities and Visits

After having many families visiting our kittens, we see time and again that individuals with cat allergies often can tolerate the Siberian breed much better than other domestic breeds. This of course, cannot be 100% guaranteed, but the majority of our adoptive families do have allergies and our success rate is  more than an 80%. In order to determine whether a Siberian kitten will be compatible for a particular family, we allow car visits (started during Covid months) in which the particular kitten that you are interested in is brought out to your vehicle and as much time as needed is given for you to visit with your kitten to allow you to see if there are any immediate reactions. This also gives families the opportunity to meet before adopting their  kitten of choice. If you live farther away and travelling for a visit is not an option, often adopters arrange a visit with someone they know with a Siberian cat. Also a hair sample may be sent to you to see if this triggers a reaction.

Researchers have found that the Siberian Cat/Kitten has reduced cat allergens called Fel d 1. This allergen is extremely strong. Secretions from the glands of the skin are the primary source of Fel d 1, but it is also deposited on the fur through the saliva when they groom themselves. Eventually, the allergen flakes off and becomes airborne which can trigger the symptoms that characterize allergies to cats. Feline allergen levels vary within the Siberian breed, and human reactions to this allergen vary considerably. Please remember, the term hypoallergenic means “causes less allergic response”. Our aim is never to place a kitten in a new home until these questions of allergen compatibility have been resolved.

Neutering/Spaying Agreement

Multiple studies have shown neutering/spaying significantly reduces Fel d 1 levels and allergic reactions. The allergen is hormonally controlled, thus after neutering, allergen levels drop sharply in both males and females.

If adopting from Soft Siberian Cattery, you will be required to sign a no-breeding agreement before adoption, stating that you will be guaranteeing that alteration will be scheduled with your vet approximately at the 6 month age mark of your kitten. This agreement also states that it is your commitment to contact us upon the success of the surgery with any updates and confirmation receipts that you have carried out your part of the Neutering/Spaying Agreement.
