Before they go home with you
All of Soft Siberians' kittens enter this world cared for as if they are ours to keep. We keep them as long as possible on momma's milk and then gradually add soft, raw and hard kibble allowing them to transition to their forever home at their peak at 9 weeks of age. They are loved and cared for as individuals until we find the homes meant for them. Our kitties go home litter- trained having had their first vaccinations, two deworming treatments and a complete veterinary health check all detailed in their Official Health Passport. The finishing touch is a blanket from momma to reassure them.
Caring for your new kitten
Bringing home a new kitten will be a high point for everyone in your family. Introducing the new addition to your family and friends is delightful and you are looking forward to years of happy companionship. These first few days can make a big difference in how well he adjusts to the new environment.
Kittens/cats are definitely creatures of habit. They do best with predictable routines that remain similar from day to day. Your new kitten has to be removed from his familiar environment, placed in a noisy, moving car and then he’s expected to adjust to new surroundings, new people and perhaps, other pets. It’s a lot to ask, and even though you and your home may be nearly ideal, even the most easy-going cat can be stressed and nervous. To help make things as smooth as possible, take it slowly and give your cat the time he needs to get used to his new home.
Siberians are the most flexible breed in temperament but even they need to become thoroughly familiar with new surroundings before they feel comfortable. An entire apartment or house can be overwhelming all at once. Many cats will hide under beds or furniture, sometimes for days. It will be much less stressful for your kitten to learn about you, your family and your home a little at a time. This is especially important if there are multiple people and/or pets in your household.
When you bring your kitten home, place him in the room you have fixed up for him. Keep this room closed off, and let him explore that area first. Let your kitten be introduced to the litter box first. Pop him in and allow him to explore around that area. Within 30 minutes, place him once again in the litter box.
Cats are curious and will want to explore their surroundings. If your kitten seems very timid, you can leave the room for a while and check back later. If you really want to stay in the room, get a book and read or observe them quietly. When your sweetie is ready to come closer, stay where you are and let him come to you. Talk in a soft, reassuring tone, pet him if he seems interested, but do not try to pick him up everytime he comes to you. Leave the open travel carrier in the room, so that he has a safe retreat if he wants one.
Give him time to learn that he can trust you. Remember that patience is a virtue and take the cues from your little one on how they are adjusting. Some take one day to adjust and others take several, everyday becoming more and more at home. The main thing is to remember they’ve been plucked from everything they loved and was familiar. Allow them the grace to bounce ....and they will!
